Peter and That’s Enough in Loughborough

December 10, 2014

Just because you decide to go vegan doesn’t mean you can no longer enjoy pizza.

I like pizza as much as the next person, and realized, once I stopped eating cheese, that what I really liked about pizzas were the base, sauce and toppings. The cheese to me was often an afterthought, and didn’t add much. There is only so much you can mask with cheese; if the base isn’t good, the pizza won’t be good. So I’m perpetually on the hunt for a really tasty, thin, stone baked pizza in Leicester.

So ok, I know Peter Pizzeria isn’t in Leicester (yet), but it’s close enough. And the pizza is good. Really good.

Peter and That’s Enough is tucked away off a little side street and can be hard to spot unless you know where you’re going. It looks quite unassuming from the outside, but once you enter you get a warm, cozy feel and the smell of freshly baked pizzas washes over you. The restaurant is funky and “studenty” – recycled furniture, couches in the corner, vintage posters on the walls, cutlery in tin cans, co-ed bathrooms… etc. All that being said, the restaurant is not pretentious, which can sometimes be the case with places like this; instead, it’s warm, inviting and the staff are really friendly and happy to help you out with recommendations.

For our starter we decided to get the duetto bruschetta, which consists of big, chunky tomatoes mixed with a little oil, red onion, basil and seasoning, topped with truffles and served on really lovely, crunchy bread. I only wish we had more of it (that is, of course, until I remember just how large the pizzas are).

Peter serves Neapolitan sourdough pizzas, made fresh and baked in a traditional stove oven so you get a lovely, crispy bottom with little charred bits on the pizza. For my main I asked if they could make me a vegan pizza and just chuck a load of veggies on it. It did not disappoint. The dough was warm, soft, and slightly charred on the edges and the tomato sauce was incredibly flavorful. My toppings included lovely sautéed mushrooms, sweet slices of red pepper, artichoke hearts and thick rounds of courgette. Every bite was so delicious that I was very nearly able to finish the entire thing (which never happens).

Andrew ordered the margarita pizza with mushrooms and artichoke hearts – so it was similar to my pizza apart from the cheese, courgettes and peppers. He thoroughly enjoyed his pizza, but felt the cheese was almost unnecessary because the dough, sauce and veggies were so flavorful they carried the dish on their own.

Overall, we really enjoyed our meal, even if we do feel our age every time we go in. We don’t go often, as it’s a bit farther than we normally like to travel for dinner, but the great news is they are opening a Leicester location in February next year. I’m sure it will be just a quirky as the original, and, more importantly, the pizzas just as delicious.
